As per believe, the Vaidyas offer a special herbal medicine known as ‘Dasamula Modaka’ to the deities on the 14th day or today (June 29, 2019) following instructions from Puri Gajapati Maharaj. Following the ‘Dasamula Modaka’ ritual, the Holy Trinity is believed to be recovered from illness.

Besides, on the fifth day of their Anasara period (Anasara Panchami), ‘Phuluri’ or scented medicinal oil is applied to the Trinities following which ritualistic ‘Osua Lagi’ is performed from the day of Sasthi and continue till Navami. The Chaka Bije Niti of the Holy Trinity is performed On Dashmi. Moreover, a paste of sandalwood, saffron and camphor is applied to the deities as part of ‘Anasara Ekadasi’ rituals (which is today June 29,2019).

Following completion of rituals, the Trinities are dressed in ‘Rakta Bastra’ after Madhyana Dhupa. Later, after the Sandhya Dhupa, sandalwood paste is applied to the idols. Then, the ‘Dasamula Modaka’ is offered to the deities. With the offering of ‘Dasamula Modaka’, the Holy Trinity is believed to be completely recover from fever. A day after the ‘Dasamula Modaka’ ritual, after the Bhoga Mandap rituals are over (which is on June 30, 2019), Puri Temple servitors go to the Puri King to inform him about the complete recovery of the deities.

Lord Jagannath and his siblings then come out of the Anasar Ghar for Nabajouban Darshan, only a day before Rath Yatra (which is on July 4, 2019). During the stay of deities inside the Anasar Ghar, devotees are not allowed to have darshan of the Holy Trinity.

For this year, 2019, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) will run 194 special trains apart from the regular trains, to the pilgrim city of Puri between July 4 (Rath Yatra) and July 13 (Suna Besa). As many as 30 special trains will run on July 4 while 48 special trains will run between July 5 and July 9. Besides, 10 trains will run on July 10 and 30 trains on July 12 (Bahuda Yatra). A total of 28 trains will run on July 13 (Suna Besa). Moreover, 48 special trains will run between Nayagarh and Khurda during the annual annual festival.

The Odisha government has also come up with measures for the convenience of visitors apart from elaborate security arrangements as toll taxes will not be collected at Pipili Toll Gate during Gundicha Yatra (July 4), Bahuda Yatra (July 12) and Suna Besha (July 13).

Early in the morning on Snana Purnima, the temple servitors escort the deities in ‘Dhadi Pahandi’ to the Snana Bedi, or the bathing altar inside the premises of Puri Temple, facing the Badadanda or the Grand Road.

All About the Importance of Snana Purnima Ritual:

The occasion marks a prelude to the annual Rath Yatra celebrations which usually falls in the month of July.

As per the ritual, Sri Sudarsan is escorted first to the Snana Bedi while Lord Balabhadra, Lord Jagannath and Goddess Subhadra follow. The deities are accorded a bath in 108 pitchers of aromatic water by Pujapanda servitors. The water for the Holy Trinities’ bath is drawn by Garabadu servitors from a well called ‘Sunakua’ which is located inside the Puri temple premises.

After completion of the bathing rituals ( the rituals are also called ‘nitis’), the sibling deities are dressed up in ‘Hati Besha’ or the elephant attire and then in the evening devotees are allowed to go to the bathing altar to offer prayers during Sahan Mella.

After the Sahan Mella, the deities are taken in a ritualistic procession to the ‘Anasar Ghar’ as it is believed that the deities get fever after the ceremonial bath. In the ‘Anasar Ghar’ they are kept in privacy under the care of the Raj Vaidya for a period of 15 days called Anasara and the Vaidya treat the deities with herbal medicine. The deities then come out of the Anasar Ghar for Nabajouban Darshan, only a day before the annual sojourn, Rath Yatra. During the deities inside the Anasar Ghar, devotees are not allowed to have darshan of the Holy Trinity.

This year the annual Rath Yatra is on July 4. The chariot journeys or the Rath Yatra of the Holy Trinity have elaborate celebrations where the deities come out of Puri temple and devotees accompanied the journeying of the Lords through the ‘Sri Kshetra’ to the Mausi Maa temple or the Gundicha temple. Before the chariots roll, the Gajapati King (Puri King) wears the traditional outfit and sweeps all around the deities and chariots with a gold-handled broom and sprinkles sandalwood water and powder; it is called as the ‘Chera Pahara’ ritual.
